Akron Restaurant to Reopen as Premier Outpatient Treatment Facility
The generations-old Akron Restaurant – a local cultural treasure by all accounts – is slated to serve the greater Lancaster County community once again.
Work began in recent weeks to renovate the property at 333 S. Seventh St., restructuring it to house Retreat outpatient drug and alcohol rehabilitation center under the umbrella of Retreat at Lancaster County. It is anticipated that the new facility will be opening in The Spring of 2016.
Peter Schorr, Founder and CEO of Retreat Premier Addiction Treatment Centers, purchased the property in December and immediately began to reimagine its potential. “This additional space will allow us to serve more individuals and families in the fight against addiction” said Mr. Schorr.
Originally opened in Ephrata in 1950 – the restaurant has seen its share of changes, moves, purchases and renovations. It’s been a staple of the Akron culture for decades, so of course there’s plenty of buzz about it opening as an outpatient treatment facility.
The talk is all favorable, however, as Retreat has become something of a household name in the local community: With a 150-bed inpatient facility a stone’s throw away in Ephrata, and another, smaller outpatient facility nestled in the Akron Borough – they’ve definitely made their mark since opening in 2011.
“We want to invest in the health and welfare of the community” said Mr. Schorr. In addition to offering various drug and alcohol treatment programs, the new facility will host a number of family and community education services.
